What is RAG? Retrieval-Augmented Generation Explained

You ask your doctor a question. A bad doctor answers from memory alone — whatever they learned in med school, years ago. A good doctor says "hold on," checks your chart, pulls your recent test results, then answers. RAG is what turns a bad-doctor AI into a good-doctor AI.

But if AI is so smart, why does it need to look things up at all?

Context window limits. Retrieved documents must fit in the AI's context window. Too many documents or documents that are too long, and the AI can't use all of them — some information gets lost.

If RAG is giving wrong answers, the first thing to check is always your knowledge base — not the AI model. RAG shifts where the problem lives: from model training quality to knowledge base quality. The bottleneck moved, it didn't disappear.
