Research on Autopilot

Last month, our sales director, Rhea, spent an entire Thursday afternoon researching fifteen enterprise software vendors for a client comparison. She opened twenty tabs, copied features into a spreadsheet, read pricing pages with confusing tiers, and by 6 p.m. had built a half-decent report.

The next week, she tried something different. She typed one message into an AI tool before leaving her desk at 5 p.m. By the time she arrived Friday morning, a detailed vendor comparison — with pricing screenshots, feature matrices, and source links — was waiting for her.

She got her Thursday evening back.

This is agentic browsing. And it already exists.

The Problem

If your work ever involves researching competitors, comparing tools, gathering pricing intel, or fact-checking claims — you know this cycle well:

  1. Open a browser tab
  2. Search for something
  3. Click five results (two are ads, one is outdated)
  4. Copy-paste useful fragments into a document
  5. Repeat for each sub-topic

For a thorough job, this takes two to three hours. Professionals in marketing, sales, consulting, and product management lose three to eight hours every week to manual web research.

warning

Most AI tools still work the old way: you ask questions, they give answers from their training data. But if you need current information from the live web, that's where agentic browsing changes the game.

What Is an Agentic Browser?

An agentic browser is an AI that doesn't just answer questions — it goes to the web and does the work for you.

Think of it like delegating to a smart assistant:

  • Normal AI chat: "What are the best project management tools?" The AI gives an opinion from what it was trained on. It may be outdated.

  • Agentic browsing: "Research the top five project management tools for teams of 20 to 50 people, compare pricing, key features, and user ratings. Put it in a comparison table with source links." The AI opens a browser, visits each tool's website, reads current pricing, checks review sites, and delivers a structured summary.

The key difference: it actually visits websites in real time. It reads current information, not stale memories.

tip

The word "agentic" means the AI takes initiative — planning its own steps, visiting multiple pages, and deciding what information matters until your question is fully answered.

Three Tools You Can Use Today

Claude Computer Use

Available to: Claude Pro and Max subscribers (included in your plan)

Anthropic launched Claude Computer Use in March 2026. Instead of just chatting, Claude can now see your screen, move the mouse, open applications, and complete tasks autonomously.

info

When I'd use this: Message Claude from your phone before leaving — "Research these ten competitors and compile a feature comparison spreadsheet" — and by morning, it's done on your computer.

Claude's strength is visual understanding. It literally sees your screen and can work across any application, not just browsers. It can open spreadsheet software, fill forms, and navigate between apps — no special setup needed.

Safety features include permission prompts for sensitive actions and an instant halt command.

ChatGPT Web Browsing

Available to: ChatGPT Plus subscribers (20 US dollars per month)

OpenAI built web browsing directly into ChatGPT. When you ask a question that needs current information, ChatGPT opens a browser, visits relevant sites, and returns a synthesized answer with source links.

tip

When I'd use this: Before an important client email, "Find the latest pricing and recent news about their company. Include two key quotes from their CEO."

ChatGPT's browsing feels like a natural conversation. You can ask follow-ups that build on what the AI just found — no fresh research needed.

Perplexity

Available to: Free tier available; Pro plans unlock premium sources

Perplexity was built as a research engine, not just a chatbot. Its whole purpose is finding information on the web and presenting it clearly with citations.

info

When I'd use this: Quick competitor research — "Research our competitor's pricing for mid-size businesses. What features do they include at each tier? Link to your sources."

Perplexity's superpower is that every answer includes source links. You can verify every claim yourself. It also reads and summarizes long reports, compares multiple sources, and handles follow-up questions naturally.

Which Should You Pick?

Quick verified answers with citationsPerplexity

You don't need all three. Start with one. If you already have ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, you already have agentic browsing.

warning

AI agents can occasionally visit the wrong page, misread pricing, or miss context. Always check source links before making decisions based on researched data.

Try This Now

Pick a topic you actually need to research this week:

  1. Open Perplexity at perplexity.ai (free to start)
  2. Type this prompt:

"Research [your competitor or topic]. What are their pricing tiers and key features? Summarize findings in a comparison table with source links."

  3. Wait 30 to 60 seconds while it browses, reads, and compiles.
  4. Check the source links to verify accuracy yourself.

Notice: you spent two minutes. What would the same research have taken you with browser tabs?
